(Washington, DC) U.S. Senator Larry Craig, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, issued the following statement today concerning the flooding in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, and its impact on facilities that serve veterans:

"My staff and I have been in regular contact with VA officials concerning the flooding and devastating effects of this phenomenal storm.

"VA has advised me that they have over 1,000 volunteers ready to provide assistance to local affected communities.

"I want to assure patients, employees, and their families that all that can be done is being done, and we will follow the President's lead as federal agencies work with state and local officials to provide needed support and resources to the victims.

"My thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost so much, and with those who are working tirelessly to save lives."
